BSFI to launch
World Ranking Snooker Tournament in India
The Stage is set
for the BSFI to launch World Ranking Snooker Tournament for the
first time in India which will see the top 64 professional cueists
from across the globe battling for a whopping prize fund of £ 300000
for 5 days at Le Meridian Hotel, New Delhi from 14-18 October 2013.
The Qualifiers of this event with 128 cueists will be played in
England and top 64 will fly down to India for this prestigious meet.
In addition, India will field 6 wild card entries to make it a 70
team event to be played on 4 tables. A leading sport channel would
cover live all games from the Round of 32 onwards.
"We
are delighted to be a part of the efforts being made by BSFI to
popularize Cue Sports in India" Said Mr. Jason Ferguson, Chairman -
WPBSA. "India has produced several top ranking players in the past
and has no dearth of talent and therefore a ranking event of this
magnitude would only motivate the promising ones" he added.
When asked Capt.
PVK Mohan, President BSFI, he said "We are excited to host an event
of this scale on annual basis to take the Cue Sports in India to a
new phase". "Although snooker is a 'niche sport' we are confident
that event of this nature would create large scale awareness and
take the game into a greater heights in India". He added.
The BSFI has been promoting the game
and the results are shown in the steep increase in number of players
taking to this sport. In the last few years itself the BSFI has
organized two World Championships, Three Asian Billiards & Under-21
Snooker Championships, Two World Billiards Championships. This
remarkable spurt in the increase in number of Championships has
augured well for the game and has shown increase in the number of
followers. The game is now spreading to all corners of the country
including far flung places such as Mizoram throwing up winners at
the National level.
This latest endeavour of the BSFI to
bring a Professional event in India is a step in the right direction
and will encourage more youngsters to take up this sport.
