Geet
Sethi welcomes initiative of Markers Tournament
It has taken a long time but better late
than never. Indian Squash Professionals' Mahendra Agarwal had the
good sense to upgrade the level of markers at the squash courts by
having exclusive tournaments for them and giving them good positions
and ensuring they were referred to as pros, not markers. Some of
them now move about in Mauritius.
Now almost 26 years later Iqbal Khakhu of
Islam Gymkhana has thought it fit to revive a tournament exclusively
for markers and 64 have entered for the event called Pro Classic
Snooker that commences on Monday. Top seed is Hari of Willingdon
Sports Club and No 2 is James who reached the semifinal stage of
recently held Juhu Gymkhana handicap, losing to Snooker maestro,
Yasin Merchant.
Welcoming this event was the cue giant
Geet Sethi who sent a message from Leeds where he reached
the World Championship semifinal. Geet stated:
"This
is great news. These are the men who work tirelessly for us and many
of them are very good players and competitors. I remember a marker
called Yunis at Gujarat Sports Club (where I grew up) who had a
great knowledge of the game and he imparted that knowledge to one
and all. Another marker called Arun who practiced with me when we
started the game. This was at Ahmedabad Gymkhana in 1974 and he was
real well wisher. But basically they have a considerable
contribution and effect on upcoming players and are often neglected.
I am really pleased to hear about this event.''
