Johnson surprises favourites Ishpreet in snooker

Johnson Narsidani - Gujarat

A hectic schedule of the matches continued to mark the day two of the Manisha Billiards and Snooker Nationals, at the Shubham Banquets here in Lucknow today.

Defending champion in sub-junior boy’s billiards Ishpreet Chadha of Maharashtra kept enjoying his easy sailing to the quarterfinals, outplaying Kunal Lamba of Delhi 358-70 at ease. But, the pre-quarter round also saw the end of UP’s challenge in the event after Mandeep Singh lost to Tamil Nadu’s Sri Krishna 169-269.

Day’s biggest highlight was the victory of Gujarat’s Johnson Narsidani, who defeated favourite Ishpreet Chadha in his third round match of sub-junior boys snooker 2-1. Johnson, who defeated Richard Papol of Andhra Pradesh 177-108 to make it to the billiards quarterfinals earlier in the day, looked confident against Chadha in snooker from the very start.

No 1 in both billiards and snooker in Gujarat, the class 10th student of Ankur School in Ahmedabad, Johnson was happy to beat strong opponent Chadha on the green baize. “This wasn’t easy for me at the start, but I never lost my confidence. I didn’t allow my rival to put pressure on me and I was focused to my natural play,” he said.

Earlier in the day, snooker’s defending champion Ashutosh Padhy of Orissa had a straight frame win against Naswin D'Souza of Goa 2-0, while runners-up Hritik Jain of Madhya Pradesh also had a straight frames win against Arnab Ghoshal of West Bengal in the round of 64. But it was Hritik's Billiard match against State mate Rohan Sahani that had the full audience on the edge of their seats. The cliff hanger finally saw Hritik squeeze into the next round with just 1 point difference. (194-193).
