Snooker Championship 2014 got off to a flying start
The Manisha National Billiards and Snooker Championship got off to a
flying start, at the Shubham Banquets here in Lucknow today
Lucknow’s Mayor Dr. Dinesh Sharma inaugurated the championship at a
colourful function. UP Billiards and Snooker Association’s president Kush
Bhargava welcomed the chief guest and invited him to light the lamp and
declare the nationals championship open, and praised the UPBSA officials
for hosting the first-ever official national championship in the state
capital. On the occasion Dr. Dinesh Sharma said that he felt very proud to
know that Indian players had won more than 20 world title in billiards and
he wish the best to the players participating in this event. UPBSA
secretary Tanuj Kohli and other officials were also present on the
occasion.
The opening day of the 21-day event, powered by the State Bank of India,
witnessed young boys rubbing shoulders against each other on the green
baize in sub-junior billiards and snooker events.
The kind of enthusiasm shown by the young specialists of the cue sport on
a cool day was a treat to watch for the moderate gathering. Defending
champion Ishpreet Chadha of Maharashtra was the first one to make it to
the pre-quarters as after getting a bye in the first round, he had a
walkover from Tridip Dekha of Assam in the second round.
Young Mandeep Singh hogged the limelight for hosts as he didn’t take much
pain in outplaying Akshay Rehani of Delhi 114-91 to enter the
pre-quarters.
Rohan Sahani from Madhya Pradesh had the biggest win in the second round
as he outplayed Harpreet Singh of Delhi 169-94 to book his place in the
last 16.
