Match Summary - FINAL

 

Game 1: Alok started the proceedings after winning the lag with white ball in hand for Best of 9 encounter of Indian National Billiards Final 2010. The safety did not landed perfectly and opened red ball inoff for Pankaj. Scoring that in-off, Pankaj started crafting the break and grabbing top table position very quickly. Missing on 15, Pankaj gave an open table to Alok with red in-off in centre pocket but Alok failed to grab the opportunity and missed white in-off on very next shot scoring 3 points only. Pankaj knows very well how to penalize such mistakes and he did the same scoring 135 break to seal the game in his favour 151-03.

 

Game 2: Alok 'the fighter’' replied with first cannon on Pankaj’s break and smashed 152 break to level the match 1-1. His 152 shown some classy toptable as well as the round the table game.

 

Game 3: Third game, Pankaj started with break cannon but missed on 13 leaving cannon position for Alok. Alok scored 37 and played safety with double baulk. Pankaj off the cushion disturbing position which Alok left and got lucky in-off by traveling his yellow ball in centre pocket. Conveying apologies to Alok for this fluke, Pankaj marched ahead and crafted 135 to get the lead 2-1.

 

Game 4: Alok start with break and next visit he started scoring on top-table. At 58 he missed a straight pot leaving Pankaj on table, but Pankaj returned immediately after scoring a single cannon. Alok again missed off the cushion cannon by a whisker after scoring 12 points only. The frustration of miss was seen in Alok’s reaction. Failing to capitalize the opportunity, Pankaj missed on on 33 from where Alok scored a break of 81 and leveled match 2 all.

 

Game 5: Fifth game, Pankaj fumbled on a score of 23 after giving a good start by picking break cannon. Alok, who is generally known for giving a tough fight, displayed his round the table game and scored unfinished break of 150 to step ahead of Pankaj 3-2.

 

Game 6: The crucial sixth game saw both the players struggling. At one side, Alok want to raise the lead, Pankaj was surprised with an un-expected fight from his opponent who is generally known for his snooker skills. Firstly Pankaj missed on 43 a white in-off in Pocket No.3. Alok with some good knocks but went out of position on a score of 46. He tried a yellow pot in Pocket No.6, which he failed. Few struggling visits by both the players ended with a chance to Pankaj and he crafted another century break to level the match 3 all (break 105).

 

15 Minutes Break

 

Game 7: Trailing 2-3, Pankaj stepped ahead of Alok 4-3 in seventh game. Alok missed a straight pot on top pocket, left Pankaj with a chance for better comeback and he did the same, scoring a break of 146 to take a lead 4-3.

 

Game 8: Pressure was mounting on Alok and was seen clearly when in eighth game, he missed a straight red-pot in pocket No. 6 on a score of 6. Pankaj, who already decided not to give Alok a chance anymore, started crafting a break to finish the match but on 57, all balls comes in a row, which he somehow managed for a cannon but on next shot he missed pot with no position to Alok. In next visit, Pankaj made it double baulk safety, which was broken by Alok very precisely. Pankaj pot another white and made double balk safety once again. Alok got no luck on his own shot but, yes, he was lucky on Pankaj’s shot as Pankaj missed the simple white in-off. Alok controlling the pressure and without wasting the chance, smashed worthy 145 to level the match again at 4 all.

 

Game 9: Decider game was open for both the players. As Pankaj has to retain his title fourth time in a row, where as Alok was in Billiards final after 6 years. Alok initiated decider game and Pankaj managed first cannon. No position on the shot gave an opportunity to Alok, which he turned into a break of 76 before missed a difficult pot-cannon attempt. Panakj on a score of 38 played pot-in-off for six points assuming good position for drop cannon, but the cannon lead him cue-ball cover with white ball. Couple of safeties by both the players gave a chance to Pankaj for red in-off which he converted into a break of 41 before missing an off the cushion cannon. Moving inch by inch round the table, Alok scored 29 before missing a long red in-off. Falling short 63 points from billiards title, Pankaj scored 27 before missing a cannon. Alok further scored 25 points to maintain his lead in decider game. The score was 130-114 in favour of Alok. Pankaj tried another cannon but missed, which Alok converted into his fourth National Billiards title with remaining 20 points on board.
