Kalyaniwala, Panchal shocked
Playing with a handicap of +45, young Kartikeya Sharma of Vashi rallied to shock Marzdi Kalyaniwala (+25) of Bombay Gymkhana 78-100, 90-84, 78-44 in the second round of the snooker competition.
Sharma dropped the opening frame and escaped to a nail-biting win in the second, in which Kalyaniwala missed the black on two occasions to allow the tie to slip out of his grasp.
In another upset in snooker, Jeet Gawde of Shivaji Park Gymkhana halted Khar Gymkhana marker Manoj Kasare with a convincing 2-0 win to advance to the pre-quarter-finals.
In billiards action, underdog Joe Thomas (+70) of Central Railway Mumbai Institute stunned Manav Panchal (+20) of WIAA 200-195 in a first round thriller.
With only five points away from a win, Panchal allowed the match to slip away after missing the white and red balls that allowed Thomas, who also missed a difficult red pot while leading 197-195, to snatch a thriller.
In another upset, Pervez Batliwala of Elphinstone Cricket Club continued his winning streak with an exciting 200-186 win over Ajay Agrawal of Matunga Gymkhana in the third round.
