Marker Dhumal snatches a thriller

Matunga Gymkhana marker Dinesh Dhumal snatched victory by just two points in a nail-biting billiards second round, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Saturday.

Dhumal was the toast of an exciting day of billiards when he beat Alex D’Cruz of Catholic Gymkhana 200-198, in a contest between equals, where both cueists enjoyed a +70 handicap.

Dhumal was well on course while leading 198-185, leaving D’Cruz in desperate need of a break of 15 to seal the issue in the 200-up format.

An anxious D’Cruz, now under immense pressure, did well to remain on track until he cracked. The break ended on 13 when D’Cruz, who had many options at his disposal, chose to try a two-cushion canon and missed.

In another thriller, Chetan Dalal of PJ Hindu Gymkhana snatched a 200-196 win over veteran C.S. Puranik of Mumbai Port Trust in a contest between quality cueists.

Dalal was trailing by 27 points as Puranik was set to take the match away. But Puranik missed a three-cushion canon that gave him a 196-169 lead. Dalal seized the opportunity and returned to seal the match, leaving Puranik helpless.

It also was a day of significant breaks in billiards, as Prabdeep Singh of MIG fired a 55 while beating M.R. Deokar of Chembur Gymkhana 200-153 and Deepak Khubchandani of Khar Gymkhana struck a break of 49 en route to a 200-165 win over Rishad Bharda of Elphinstone Cricket Club.

Other significant players to advance to the second round were A.R. Kamat of Chembur Gymkhana and Iqbal Rokadia of Elphinstone CC.

Prabdeep Singh completed a rewarding day when he narrowly beat underdog Harsh Pherwani 100-91, 106-98 in an exciting first round snooker tie in which both frames ended in tight finishes.
