Jal records upset win

 

Septuagenarian Jal Singaporewala registered an upset win in a thrilling black ball finish to advance to the second round, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Monday.

 

At 77, Singaporewala, of hosts Elphinstone Cricket Club, showed no signs of advancing years as he enjoyed a +60 handicap and home conditions to overcome fancied Abhinav Edake (+50) of Thane Sports Club 104-90, 90-120, 106-100 in the snooker competition.

 

After the cueists traded a frame each, Singaporewala was trailing 99-100 in the decider and he potted the black to add Edake to the casualty list.

 

In another first round thriller, Manjit Singh of North Indian Association beat All Parsi champion Sorab Nejabat of Parsi Gymkhana 109-89, 85-111, 106-99 in a black ball tie after they were level at 99-all in the decider.

 

Also advancing to the second round was S. Vengurlekar of Mumbai Port Trust who beat M. Puneet 113-92, 94-117, 104-95 after snatching the decider on the pink.

 

Ghanshyam Vaid of PJ Hindu Gymkhana beat Mehernosh Billimoria of Bombay Gymkhana 84-111, 116-108, 122-111 in another close first round match.

 

Other significant players to advance to the second round were Rishabh Jain of Dadar Club, marker Amit Jadhav of Islam Gymkhana, Shyam Kotak of PJ Hindu Gymkhana and Saumil Karkera of Elphinstone CC.
