Success vs. Joy
PREFACE
This book was born because of Sunil Agarwal’s quest for finding the distinction between success and joy. It is a result of the hundreds of questions, which Sunil pondered over during a very intense, introspective journey, which we traversed together in five days of absolute seclusion.
Sunil, 46, is intellectually blessed, having graduated from premier institutes such as IIT Delhi and the famed IIM Ahmedabad.
However, though he achieved the necessary social status in corporate life, a feeling of inadequacy and failure dogged him. This was due to his lack of accomplishment in the area that he considered his true passion– the billiard table.
He then took the radical decision of devoting much of himself in the pursuit of the game in his early 30s. However, this decision was taken, not because he wanted to become a master of the sport, but for all the wrong reasons like success, recognition and fame. In the pursuit of success, he lost joy. His subsequent search has been to capture that elusive feeling of joy – the joy of the sweet spot.
Writing this book has made the distinction clearer for both of us. Success is if the book sells. Joy is in the writing of it.
