Success vs. Joy

- LVIII -

The Way the Humility Crumbles

Ask a champion about his childhood and he’ll recall how he just loved playing and learning the techniques of his chosen pursuit. Suddenly, after he became successful, his aunts and uncles wanted to show him off to their neighbors. He was hounded by hundreds of questions. The press wanted comments and photographs. That would, in most cases, have corrupted whatever feeling of humility he may have had.

He will now be spending a lot of time in deciding which agent to hire, how to maximize earnings. Strangers will invite him to parties where praise flows freely. He will spend time mulling over which car to buy, which clothes to wear to create the right image. Gradually the pure action would become powerless in society’s web.
