Snooker on the decline ...

Snooker is declining in Pakistan but the 6-Red format is giving it a new lease of life like T20 in cricket. That's the view of former Asian champion Yasin Merchant who met sports journalists at the Karachi Club. Merchant was in Karachi playing in the NJI Pentangular 6-Red series.

Yasin said cue sport was facing problems in India and Pakistan.
"But Pankaj Adwani and Aditya Mehta's victories have been inspirational to improve level of juniors in India. In India we have to work a lot for improvement in snooker. Because we don't have back-up players."

Yasin said India and Pakistan had a lot of talented cueists. He said in 6-Red snooker results came immediately as the frames were of shorter duration. "That's the type of game the spectator enjoys. I have no doubt this game will be popular soon. He said if India wanted to improve it must look out for talent at street-corner clubs. There is a lot of talent in such clubs but it destroyed because of neglect. UK greats like Jimmy White and Ronnie O'Sullivan came from the street-side parlours," said Yasin who advised: "Pick up the talented player from there and your problems of talent hunt will be solved. These lads will achieve major victories for India."

About the upcoming World snooker championship, Yasin said:
"We have to consider China whose government is backing its sportsfolk." In contrast the attitude of the Indian government is: ' Doobo ya maro ' (Drown or swim).

Above all Yasin said the problem that's hardest to solve is getting sponsors. Without money no sport can survive.
