Prabdeep stuns Daruwala

Prabdeep Singh of MIG, Bandra stunned Rohinton Daruwala in a thriller to storm into the billiards quarter-finals, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Monday.

Enjoying a handicap of +50, Singh overcame an indifferent start to upset Daruwala (+25) of Dadar Parsi Colony Gymkhana 250-242 in the pre-quarter-finals.

In a neck-and-neck battle that could have gone either way, Daruwala missed a crucial yellow in-off that ended a break of 36 as he led 242-227. Singh returned to initiate an unfinished break of 23 and snatched the match away.

Chandu Shah of PJ Hindu Gymkhana escaped to a narrow 200-178 win over formidable Rovin D’Souza in the third round, while Meenal Thakur of PJ Hindu Gymkhana and Hasan Badami of Islam Gymkhana advanced to the third round.

In the second round, Deependera Pinkyar of Shivaji Park Gymkhana pipped Clyde Affonso of Catholic Gymkhana 200-194 in another thriller.

In snooker action, junior girls’ national billiards and snooker champion Arantxa Sanchis warmed up for sterner tests ahead with a 119-112, 130-77 win over Soham Sawant of MIG that included a black ball tie in the first frame.
