Saboo, Tengra shocked

Title contenders Amit Saboo and Farhad Tengra were among the favourites that crashed out on another dramatic day of upsets, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Friday.

Anonymous Jayesh Salvi of Kalyan set the ball rolling for an ominous day for the seeds when he subdued Saboo of Bombay Gymkhana 2-0 to storm into the snooker pre-quarter-finals.

Likewise, CCI rookie Abhinav Kripalu came up with an impressive performance to shock Goldfilled Open runner-up Farhad Tengra of Elphinstone Cricket Club by a similar margin in the second round.

In another upset, Col. Sanchis of US Club beat Vivek Wadhwa of Bombay Gymkhana 115-86, 86-97, 101-94 in a tight first round contest.

The trend continued in billiards as favourites Siddharth Sogani of Radio Club, Deepak Khubchandani of Khar Gymkhana and Sunil Ghadge of Central Railway Mumbai Institute made premature exits.

Dark horse Aditya Agrawal of Bombay Gymkhana once again lit up a disappointing day for the fancied cueists with the tournament’s highest break of 90 that bettered his own 88, en route to a 200-167 second round win over PJ Hindu Gymkhana’s Samay Wadhwan.
