Daruwala escapes to victory

Dark horse Rohinton Daruwala escaped to a thrilling two-point win to advance to the third round in billiards, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Thursday.

With a +20 handicap, Daruwala of Dadar Parsi Colony Gymkhana rallied to a 200-198 win over a gallant Carl Serrao of Catholic Gymkhana who had a +50 handicap.

Serrao, who trailed by about 40 points, relied on small but significant breaks to stage a brilliant recovery midway before surging to a surprise 198-193 lead that left Daruwala bewildered. But with just two points needed for what would have been a spectacular win, Serrao missed a red in-off and blew away a golden opportunity. Daruwala heaved a sigh of relief and returned to seal the match.

In another second round tie, Shailesh Rao of Matunga Gymkhana upset Shekhar Krishnan of Chembur Gymkhana 200-191, while young Jaiveer Dhingra of CCI stunned V. ‘Raja’ Subramaniam of Matunga Gymkhana 200-132 in the first round.

In snooker action, Nishad Chowgule of PYC Gymkhana, Pune continued his winning ways with a shock win over Manav Panchal of WIAA 91-51, 73-83, 106-32 in a contest between quality cueists.
