Formidable Dhruv Sitwala and Nikhil Ootam were among the posse of favourites who crashed out on a dramatic day of upsets, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Monday.

As the favourites struggled to find their form, veteran Darayus Dhala of Elphinstone Cricket Club made the most of home conditions to shock Sitwala 98-72, 90-30 in the second round of the snooker competition, to kick off a rewarding day for the underdogs.

V. Subramaniam of Matunga Gymkhana and Roshan Mirchandani of Khar Gymkhana were the others to join the casualty list following defeats in the second round, while Anish Zaveri of PJ Hindu Gymkhana shocked Nikhil Ootam of CCI in the first round.

State junior No. 2 and title contender Aditya Agrawal lit up the otherwise disastrous day for the seeds with a
sparkling break of 72 that was the highest in the snooker competition so far en route to a 2-0 win over Aubrey
Chattelier of Catholic Gymkhana.

Agrawal, who also has the highest break of 88 in the billiards competition, was on course for a century break
when he missed the black.

Pervez Batliwala of Elphinstone Cricket Club fashioned the only upset of the day in billiards with a 200-131 win over young Jaiveer Dhingra of CCI.
