CCI lad stuns Devendra Joshi

Unknown Rishabh Amin of CCI stunned India No. 3 Devendra Joshi in a first round billiards tie, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Wednesday.

Unperturbed by significant breaks of 76, 41 and 45 by Joshi, Amin romped to a thrilling 200-160 win for the biggest success of his brief career on the green baize.

Enjoying a +70 handicap against Joshi’s -280, Amin did well to stay ahead while an off-colour Joshi struggled to live up to his reputation with poor potting.

Amin was up by a good 60 points at 194-134 when the former Asian champion, needing a break of 66, threatened to take it away. Joshi was on course until his break ended prematurely on 26 when he missed a sitter that offered Amin the opportunity to fashion a famous victory.

Amin later crashed in the first round of the snooker competition as he went down to twice Asian champion Yasin Merchant who warmed up with a fluent 2-0 win.

In another upset in the billiards competition, Prabdeep Singh of MIG overcame Chetan Dalal of PJ Hindu Gymkhana 200-182 in the second round.

Fancied Chandu Shah of PJ Hindu Gymkhana (-100) recovered from a deficit of 60 points to escape to an exciting 200-197 win over septuagenarian Ramsen Bhiwankar (+80) of Khar Gymkhana who had the match in his grasp but let it slip away.

In snooker, Nainesh Gosaliya of Matoshree upset young Nikhil Ghadge of Khar Gymkhana 111-81, 84-119, 109-102 in the second round, after snatching victory in a thrilling black ball finish in the decider.
