Khandwala upsets Madan

Raj Khandwala of CCI shocked State No. 2 Vishal Madan for a surprise entry into the billiards second round, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Monday.

Playing with a +70 handicap against a formidable opponent with a -80 handicap, Khandwala fashioned an impossible 200-197 win over Madan in a nail-biting contest, on a dramatic day of upsets in the billiards competition where the septuagenarians held centrestage and stole the day’s honours.

Khandwala fired a significant break of 49 that helped him to a 141-90 lead. But Madan replied with breaks of 67 and 52 on consecutive visits to keep pace and close in at 193-198 after missing a simple canon. Khandwala held his nerve and sealed the issue with a canon that left Madan bewildered.

In other significant upsets, septuagenarian Sakharam Ghadi of Central Railway Mumbai Institue beat fancied Mithil Shinde by three points and Rishabh Amin of CCI overcame Tejas Shah of PJ Hindu Gymkhana 200-197 in close encounters.

Also advancing to the second round following significant wins were, Cyrus Aga of Elphinstone Cricket Club, Prathamesh Sawant of Thane Sports Club and septuagenarians Prakash Rajani and Ramsen Bhiwankar, both of Khar Gymkhana.

Maharashtra junior billiards champion Aditya Agrawal fired the tournament’s highest billiards break with an 88 and added a 64 to beat Mehernosh Captain of Elphinstone Cricket Club 200-122.
