Kotwani wins a thriller by one point

Hitesh Kotwani of Radio Club snatched a solitary point win in a thrilling billiards first round tie, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Thursday.

With a handicap of only +30 that reflected his reputation, Kotwani was on course while leading 196-179 in the 200-up format. But underdog Karande of CCI, enjoying a handicap of +70, threatened to take the match away when he fired a surprise break of 20 and fell short by one point when he missed a crucial long red that ended the break. Kotwani returned to snap up the remaining four points to heave a sigh of relief that left a helpless Karande wondering what might have been.

In another upset, Clyde Alphonso of Catholic Gymkhana beat Abhishek Soparkar of Thane Sports Club 200-138 to join Kotwani in the second round.

In the snooker competition, Eric Mistry of hosts Elphinstone Cricket Club initiated the first of three upsets of the day when he rallied to shock Gaurav Sanghvi of Garware Club House 95-99, 98-82, 107-97 in a thrilling first round in which all frames ended on the black.

In other significant upsets, Joe Thomas of Central Railway Mumbai Institute beat Chandu Shah 2-0, while young Samay Wadhwan of PJ Hindu Gymkhana overcame Kekoo Nicholson of CCI 108-59, 85-115, 103-100 in a tie that ended in a nail-biting decider.
