Dhruv, Meenal stretched

Dhruv Sitwala and national women’s champion Meenal Thakur were taken the distance before advancing to the second round, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Tuesday.

Kicking off their snooker campaigns on an ominous note, the PJ Hindu Gymkhana cueists encountered early jitters as Sitwala (+10) overcame young Hardik Jagda of Vashi Gymkhana 91-69, 73-94, 92-66, while, in a tight contest between quality cueists, Meenal prevailed over Chirag Mehta of Garware Club House 97-119, 98-96, 112-83.

After snatching the opening frame Mehta looked set to win the second and the match, with Meenal down by two snookers. But Mehta bungled on the green while choosing to try a shot off the cushion instead of a direct pot. Meenal seized the opportunity to get back into the match and won the frame by just two points.

In other close first round encounters, Jimmy Chinoy of hosts Elphinstone Cricket Club upset Seby D’Cruz of Catholic Gymkhana 105-77, 105-98 after winning the second frame on the black, while Vilas Upsham of Vashi beat Suresh Mahadik of Goregaon Sports Club 107-99, 84-96, 107-99 in another exciting black ball finish.

It was a rewarding day for the hosts’ cueists as Kaizad Mehta, Darayus Dhala and Behram Aga joined Jimmy Chinoy in the second round.
