Girish, Agarwal crash out

Formidable cueists R. Girish, Arun Agrawal and Harish Mirchandani were the biggest casualties on a dramatic day of upsets, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on
Sunday.

Pranav Desai of Santacruz Gymkhana kicked off a rewarding day for the underdogs when he shocked title contender R. Girish in the second round of the snooker competition with a 2-0 rout.

Little known Kirti Parikh of PJ Hindu Gymkhana later upset Harish Mirchandani 94-82, 99-108, 108-101 in a thrilling first round tie that went down to the wire.

Mirchandani lived dangerously, dropping the opening frame narrowly before snatching the second in similar fashion. In a tight decider that could have gone either way, Kirti snatched the frame and match in a nail-biting black ball finish that left Mirchandani helpless.

Mithil Shinde (+50) of Thane Sports Club upset Arun Agrawal (+40) of hosts Elphinstone Cricket Club 102-78, 54-129, 97-80 in another first round thriller.

Shinde took the lead in the opening frame after Agrawal surrendered on the colours. But a determined Agrawal made amends in the crucial second frame with significant breaks of 42, 20 and 25, respectively, to force the decider.

Shinde began the third and final frame with a significant break of 25 to surge to a vital 75-49 lead. But Agrawal recovered to close in at 71-78 after missing a straight-forward pink that would have helped him draw level.

Back in the match, Agrawal snatched a narrow seven point lead after potting the green and brown with only the colours remaining, before choosing to play a safety shot on the blue.

But Shinde surprised Agrawal when he returned to brilliantly pot the long blue and return ideally for the pink to snatch the frame and match.

In another close first round encounter between talented teenagers, 17-year-old Aman Godwani of Khar Gymkhana overcame 14-year-old Suchit Nandal of Don Bosco 101-124, 106-105, 104-93.

After dropping the opening frame Godwani had lost all hope when Nandal was in an envious position to pot the pink and take the frame and match away. But Nandal, who chose to pot the pink off the cushion rather that use the long rest to chip it in, missed and gave Godwani a golden opportunity to clinch the decider.

Nilesh Patankar of Thane Sports Club, Pervez Batliwala of Elphinstone CC, Jeet Gawde of Shivaji Park Gymkhana and Junaid Syed of Central Railway Mumbai Institute also registered upset wins to enter the second round.

Vilas Upsham of Vashi Gymkhana completed the day of upset when he shunted out Goldfilled Open winner Sharan Damania of Khar Gymkhana 57-110, 114-71, 93-82.
