Subramaniam advances

 

V. 'Raja' Subramaniam of Matunga Gymkhana was one of the fancied cueists who advanced to the second round, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Saturday.

 

Subramaniam, a semi-finalist at the Goldfilled Open, overcame an indifferent start in the first frame to sail to a 108-97, 113-83 win over Sachin Gemavat of Mandpeshwar Civic Federation, Borivali in the snooker competition.

 

In another first round tie, Abhishek Soparkar of Thane Sports Club beat Ajay Agrawal of Matunga Gymkhana 97-78, 81-113, 114-98 in a close contest the went the distance.

 

Joining Subramaniam and Soparkar in the second round was octogenarian legend Tony Monteiro who outplayed Chandu Kansodaria of Mandpeshwar Civic Federation 93-84, 105-67.

 

An impressive Rohit Gandhi of Nagpur advanced to the third round following a 120-69, 129-55 win over Manoj Mayekar of Thane Sports Club.

 

In first round billiards action, Central Railway cueists R. Girish and Faisal Khan registered easy wins to warm up for sterner tests ahead.
