Faisal, Rovin survive scares

State junior champion Rovin D’Souza and title contender Faisal Khan survived scares in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Friday.

On an exciting day of snooker that featured a posse of fancied cueists, Central Railway’s Faisal Khan (+10) was forced to sweat for a narrow 102-55, 48-89, 104-77 second round win over anonymous Mohit Bhulchandani (+55) of Khar Gymkhana who came up with a surprise challenge.

In an entertaining contest that had its fair share of thrills, Bhulchandi announced his arrival on the domestic circuit when he took a narrow 64-61 lead with two reds and the colours remaining in the decider, after the cueists traded a frame each and saved the best for the last.

But a few fouls on the yellow later, all off free balls, with only the colours remaining, offered Khan the opportunity to sail ahead, first by 10 points at 73-63 and then by 20 points at 93-73.

It was an entertaining climax, marked by brilliant snookers that offered Bhulchandani hope of causing the biggest upset in the competition. But Khan held on, even though he missed a simple brown, and sealed the issue on the pink to live another day.

Islam Gymkhana’s formidable Abdur Rehman, a pre-quarter-finalist at the Goldfilled Open Handicap tournament, struggled past Nagpur lad Faizan Mohammed 92-115, 119-115, 111-62 in another second round contest that included a black ball finish in the crucial second frame that Mohammed frittered away with the blue at his mercy.

In a first round tie, Rovin D’Souza of Bombay Gymkhana overcame Prathamesh Sawant of Thane Sports Club 44-105, 101-68, 99-87 following a disastrous opening frame and a tight decider.

In another close first round encounter, fancied Ibrahim Sheikh of Mandpeshwar Civic Federation, Borivili, a quarter-finalist at the Goldfilled Open, endured an early challenge before getting past Vishal Mehta of Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana 92-98, 101-79, 116-79 after dropping a tight opening frame that ended in a black ball finish.

Khar Gymkhana’s Roshan Mirchandani fired the tournament’s second highest break of 52 in the second frame en route to a convincing 105-75, 99-67 first round win over Siddharth Sogani of Radio Club.
