Fitter, Agrawal shocked

Favourites Kaizad Fitter and Arun Agrawal crashed out on a dramatic day of upsets, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Sunday.

After being twice in arrears and winning the decider on the pink, unknown Nilesh Patankar of Thane Sports Club snatched a thrilling 3-2 win over Bombay Gymkhana’s Fitter for a surprise entry into the snooker quarter-finals.

Joining Patankar in the last eight was twice Asian champion Yasin Merchant who delighted with significant breaks en route to a 3-0 win over Rahul Narang of North Indian Association.

Merchant kicked off the match with breaks of 36 and an unfinished 35 in the opening frame, an unfinished 73 in the second and 43 in the third that reflected his class and the fine form he is enjoying, soon after returning from the Asian Championships in Thailand where he finished third, and the selection trials in Goa.

Also advancing to the last eight was Rishabh Jain of Dadar Club who halted Nishad Chowgule of PYC, Pune in another 3-2 thriller.

In billiards, Hasan Badami (+20) of Islam Gymkhana shocked Arun Agrawal (-225) 250-75 to storm into the quarter-finals. Agrawal came up with significant breaks to cover up his handicap, but Badami was equally impressive in one of his most famous wins.

In another upset Mahesh Jagdale of North Indian Association beat Chandu Shah of PJ Hindu Gymkhana 250-101 to join Badami in the last eight.
