Puranik stuns Doshi

C.S. Puranik of Mumbai Port Trust snatched the crucial second frame on the black to rally to an exciting 2-1 win,  in the first round of the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by the Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Wednesday.

In one of the day’s most entertaining encounters in the snooker competition, veteran Puranik, who enjoyed a +50 handicap, rolled back the years to surprise Sandeep Doshi (+55) of Matunga Gymkhana 71-96, 109-108, 106-72.

Doshi got off to a good start by narrowly snatching the opening frame. But just when he looked to seal the issue in the second frame, he endured an unfortunate blue in-off that offered Puranik a golden opportunity to keep his hopes alive.

The very experienced Puranik seized the moment and returned to pot the blue, pink and black, all difficult shots, to force the decider. Puranik never looked back and raced ahead in the third and final frame to leave Doshi stranded.

In significant upsets, Faizan Mohammed (+60) of Nagpur crushed Rajeev Sharma (+40) of WIAA 98-79, 125-42, while Iqbal Rokadia (+60) of hosts Elphinstone CC beat young Raj Khandwala (+55) of CCI 84-121, 117-88, 102-68.

In another close tie, formidable Siddharth Shah (+45) of Dadar Club survived an early scare before overcoming Rishad Bharda (+60) of Elphinstone CC 67-96, 115-81, 100-83.

It also was a day of significant breaks. Title contender Faisal Khan (+10) of Central Railway Sports Association fired the highest break of 56 in the competition so far as he opened his campaign with a 2-0 win over Debopriyo Chakraborty, while Cyrus Aga of Elphinstone CC got a break of 33 in his 2-1 win over S.K. Laha of Mumbai Port Trust.
