Badami survives Laher scare

Hasan Badami of Islam Gymkhana escaped to a nail-biting two-point win over Homi Laher to enter the fourth round in the billiards competition of the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Friday.

Laher enjoyed +80 handicap and remained ahead to keep the formidable Badami (+20) under pressure. But Badami managed to close in towards the end to trail 191-196 to set the stage for a humdinger.

While in need of just four points for what would have been a stunning win, Laher tried the white that was hanging on the pocket and an easy canon at the same time, but missed by a whisker. Rattled by the unbelievable blemish, Laher lost his way as Badami returned to snatch the match with a sigh of relief.

Yasin Merchant, who finished third in the recent Asian Snooker Championships in Thailand, rallied to beat young Samay Wadhwan of PJ Hindu Gymkhana 62-86, 94-67, 104-56 in a snooker third round that included a spectacular break of 103 in the decider after trailing 1-56. Merchant, whose century break is the highest in the competition so far that erased Aditya Agrawal's 72, could have enhanced the break to 110 but he endured an unfortunate black in-off.

Among the significant players to advance to the third round were Mahesh Jagdale of North Indian Association, Arun Agrawal of Elphinstone Cricket Club and Sanjeev Bijlani of Park Club.
