Shettys advanced as Keshaw wins in black-ball finish

It was all in the family as Mohan Shetty and his son Kavesh of Catholic Gymkhana advanced to the second round in contrasting fashion, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by the Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Tuesday.

Kavesh Shetty kicked off the day with an exciting 119-106, 116-112 win over Dara Mehta of hosts Elphinstone CC, in a first round contest between +60 handicap players of different generations.

Relying on experience, 60-year-old Mehta ran Kavesh close, which forced the 16-year-old to snatch both frames on the black ball.

Mehta had his chances in the opening frame where he needed the pink and the black. But he missed the opportunity after enduring a jump-ball while attempting the pink.

In contrast, Kavesh’s father Mohan cruised to a 106-97, 107-75 win over Ashish Khubchandani of Khar Gymkhana that included a close first frame.

In another close tie between +55 cueists, marker Mahadeo Karande of Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana rallied to overcome B.K. Ramsingh of Mandpeshwar Civic Federation 85-106, 116-74, 117-93.

Also advancing to the second round was strong contender Abdur Rehman of Islam Gymkhana who beat Kiran Chedda of Dombivali Gymkhana 119-79, 102-77.
