Nagpur lad Rohit rolls past Rovin

Nagpur lad Rohit Gandhi fashioned an exciting 2-1 win to upset state junior champion Rovin D’Souza in the third round of the snooker competition, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Thursday.

Gandhi, who had a +45 handicap, initiated a late burst after an indifferent start to rally to a 77-110, 141-47, 129-71 win, in a quality contest between upcoming cueists.

Before Gandhi settled down, D’Souza (+35) fired a break of 35 to snatch the opening frame. But Gandhi emphasized he was no pushover when he came back to surge to a lead of 40 points to hold the edge in the second frame. He was on course for an unfinished 40 when he started a late break with a difficult red that was stationed tightly at the bottom cushion, but it ended at 27 after missing the pink.

D'Souza surprisingly struggled in the decider and missing the yellow on the spot while using the rest reflected his dip in form. Gandhi was in no mood to let the advantage slip away while holding on to a slender lead and snatched the frame and match on the pink.

Jayesh Salvi of Kalyan advanced to the quarter-finals following a 94-70, 100-66, 101-75 win over Jeet Gawde of Shivaji Park Gymkhana in a best-of-five frames contest.

In billiards, veteran Prakash Rajani (+60) of Khar Gymkhana shocked Shekhar Surve (+20) of Shivaji Park Gymkhana in the second round, while Sayed Junaid (+70) of HCL Info Systems surprised Kishen Bhatia (+30) of PJ Hindu Gymkhana in the first round.

National women’s champion Meenal Thakur of PJ Hindu Gymkhana advanced to the fourth round, while Nikhil Ootam of CCI entered the third round.
