Thakkar upsets Saboo to enter Quarter Finals

Ankit Thakker of Matunga Gymkhana upset title contender Amit Saboo to enter the billiards quarter-finals, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Wednesday.

A break of 57 was the feature of Thakker’s facile 250-115 win over the formidable Saboo who struggled to live up to his reputation while enduring poor form.

With the advantage of a +50 handicap, Thakker remained ahead right through while keeping Saboo in check, to fashion one of the biggest upsets in the billiards competition.

In other upsets, Harish Mirchandani of Khar Gymkhana beat Sunil Jain of Garware Club House in the third round, while Homi Laher of Elphinstone Cricket Club prevailed over Malcolm Kapadia of Dadar Parsi Colony Gymkhana in the second round.

In snooker, junior national girls champion Arantxa Sanchis recovered from the surprise loss of the opening frame to beat state sub junior boys champion Jaiveer Dhingra of CCI 111-92, 91-103, 113-88 in the second round.
