71 Year Old Batliwala stuns Roshan Mirchandani; storms into Billiards quarter final

Septuagenarian Pervez Batliwala stunned favourite Roshan Mirchandani to storm into the billiards quarter-finals, in the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Tuesday.

Veteran 71-year-old Batliwala of Elphinstone Cricket Club was the toast of the day when he overcame Mirchandani 250-159 for a surprise entry into the last eight.

With the advantage of playing in familiar conditions and a +90 handicap, Batliwala also relied on small but significant breaks to stay ahead and put Mirchandani under pressure right through the encounter.

Mirchandani initiated a late bid to make a comeback, but Batliwala utilized his experience brilliantly to keep his young opponent at bay for one of the most exciting wins in the competition.

In another surprise verdict, Khar Gymkhana marker Manoj Kasare (+60) overcame Siddharth Parikh (-180) of PJ Hindu Gymkhana 200-129 in the third round, even as the latter fired breaks of 75 and 72, in vain.

In snooker action, Kaizad Fitter of Bombay Gymkhana beat Kartikeyan Sharma of Vashi 2-0 in the third round, after snatching a close second frame.
