Sangeeta sizzles

Sangeeta Hemchand of Willingdon Sports Club, Mahalaxmi was the toast of the day as she stormed into the third round of the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana on Sunday.

The only lady cueist remaining in the competition, Sangeeta sizzled with impressive potting en route to an exciting 96-105, 106-103, 116-87 upset win over young Sunil Rajani of Vashi that included a nail-biting black ball finish in the second frame.

Battling poor vision and a few ailments that would have discouraged athletes from pursuing their favourite sport, Sangeeta revealed impeccable form that delighted green baize enthusiasts on a lazy Sunday.

Enjoying a handicap of +60, Sangeeta surged to a 20-point lead in the opening frame to put Rajani (+55) under pressure. But Rajani came back into the frame and snatched it on the pink.

Ignoring the early deficit, the experienced Sangeeta continued potting well and made sure she was always ahead in the second frame. But Rajani once again closed in at 97-99 with Sangeeta needing the pink. She missed and Rajani fluked it to lead 103-99, until Sangeeta returned to slice the difficult black into the centre pocket.

Trailing by 22 points midway through the third and deciding frame with eight reds on the table, Sangeeta didn’t lose focus. She believed in herself and was rewarded with a brilliant yellow pot while using the long rest before she surged to a crucial 105-85 lead.

The contest was wide open as Rajani had an opportunity to snare the frame and match with 22 points remaining. But Sangeeta shattered his hopes with a brilliant long blue pot and followed it by gently sinking in the pink to seal her place in the next round.

In other second round upsets, Percy Patel of Matunga Gymkhana beat Siddharth Parikh of Central Railway, Behram Aga of Elphinstone Cricket Club beat Carl Serrao of Catholic Gymkhana and Rohit Bajaj of CCI prevailed over Dasrath Sable of Garware Club House.
