In-off sinks Kavesh's hope

Teenager Kavesh Shetty of Catholic Gymkhana went down fighting in a thrilling second round encounter, in the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana on Saturday.

Sanchit Gemavat (+55) of Mandpeshwar Civic Foundation escaped to a 57-110, 110-97, 121-119 win that included a black ball finish in the second and third frames and ended in the decider when 16-year-old Shetty endured an unfortunate in-off.

Shetty (+70) got off to a dream start with impressive safety play and potting for a comfortable win in the opening frame. He was ahead in the second frame too, until he missed the green that rattled the jaw.

Gemavat, who returned to pot the green and brown before Shetty potted the blue and pink to draw level at 97-97, forced the decider after potting the pink and black.

Once again, Shetty remained ahead by a slender margin in the third and deciding frame before Gemavat came up with a few snookers and surged to a crucial 114-108 lead. But Shetty came back in brilliant fashion to pot the blue and pink to regain the lead at 119-114 that left Gemavat helpless and staring at certain defeat, until he was done in by the in-off.
