Favourites crash out.

Reza Merchant and Sunil Jain were among four of the favourites who were shocked in the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana on Tuesday.

On an ominous day for fancied players, Aman Agarwal of Dadar Club rallied to beat Jain of Garware Club House 89-104, 125-89, 116-89, while Abhishek Soparkar of Thane Gymkhana stunned Merchant of Bombay Gymkhana 62-118, 109-95, 105-78 in exciting first round encounters.

Merchant got off to a dream start by snatching the opening frame that included two breaks of 33 each. But he failed to capitalize on the early advantage and surprisingly lost his way.

In other upsets of the day, Karthikeya Sharma (+60) of Vashi bt Harsh Thacker (+55) of Mulund Lions Club) 118-96, 111-100, while marker Jeet Gawde (+60) of Shivaji Park Gymkhana bt Ravindra Sawant (+55) of Garware Club House 107-103, 117-88.

Abdul Rehman of Islam Gymkhana rifled in the tournament’s highest break of 67 in the first frame, en route to a convincing 136-46, 93-72 win over Rohinton Daruwala of Dadar Parsi in a contest between quality cueists. Rehman was on his way to a clearance and a possible break of 102 when he missed the last red.
