Tengra in final

Title contender Farhad Tengra of Elphinstone Cricket Club remained on course with a thrilling 3-2 win to advance to the final of the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana on Sunday.

Tengra endured a strong challenge against an equally formidable V. ‘Raja’ Subramaniam of Matunga Gymkhana to fashion a thrilling 66-101, 103-75, 107-96, 66-76, 99-90 semi-final win in the best-of-five frames contest to set up a title clash with Sharan Damania of Khar Gymkhana.

In a match between quality cueists that could have gone either way, a serene Subramaniam snatched the opening frame to put Tengra under early pressure. But surprisingly, he lost his way in the next two frames after enduring poor potting including missing an easy pink in the centre pocket, that ended a break of 23 in the third frame, and a red soon after.

Subramaniam nevertheless enjoyed a slender 96-89 lead in the frame with brown to black remaining. But a foul-and-miss on two occasions allowed Tengra the opportunity to sink in the last three colours for a crucial 2-1 advantage.

After missing an easy blue in the centre pocket and two reds early in the fourth frame, Subramaniam trailed 48-60. But he drew level with a small but significant break of 12 with two reds and the colours remaining that marked his return to form.

Subramaniam began potting impressively, making amends for earlier blemishes and he snared the frame with a brilliant long brown to force the decider.

Tengra trailed by 23 points at 50-73 in the final frame, after missing the black and red, but made amends with a timely break of 20 to close in at 70-73.

While Subramaniam fouled on the black and missed the green that rattled the jaw, Tengra surged to an 83-74 lead. But Tengra endured a foul on the blue and an unfortunate in-off on the same colour that enhanced Subramaniam’s hopes as the latter trailed by just three points at 84-87 to set the stage for a humdinger.

While Tengra potted the blue to lead 92-84, Subramaniam closed in at 90-92 after sinking the pink, leaving the frame for a thrilling black ball finish.

After he missed the black that rattled the jaw and escaped an in-off that kept Subramaniam’s hopes alive, Tengra finally fired in a long pot to end Subramaniam’s brilliant challenge, but not before watching the latter’s long black rattle the jaw on the previous visit.
