Dossa wins in dramatic finish

Former champion Nishant Dossa of CCI rallied to a thrilling 2-1 win in the first round of the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana on Saturday.

Winner of this title in 1998, when he beat Yasin Merchant in the final, and runner-up in 2002, Dossa lived up to his reputation to fashion an exciting 84-99, 98-79, 105-93 win over formidable Sahil Khan of Islam Gymkhana, in a match that could have gone either way.

In a pulsating contest between quality cueists, Khan snatched the opening frame in a tight finish to serve an early warning. But Dossa, who has returned to the green baize after a year, following a severe back strain, snared the second frame in another close finish to set the stage for a humdinger.

Both players gave little away in the decider and kept pace with impressive safety play and snookers until Khan managed to surge to a crucial 93-83 lead, with the brown, blue, pink and black balls remaining for a total of 22.

Returning to the table under immense pressure with victory within handshaking distance, Dossa believed in himself and relied on experience to initiate a dramatic clearance to take the frame and match away, as a helpless Khan watched in awe.

In another exciting encounter, Chandra Poojari of Tata Sports Club overcame young Megh Shah of Chembur Gymkhana 109-105, 112-105 after the first frame ended in a black ball finish and the second in a black ball tie.

In contrast, fancied Bhushan Shahade (+45) of Dadar Club eased to a 103-72, 114-74 first round win over Aditya Subramaniam (+60) of Matoshree
