Dalmia rallies to enter semi finals

Trailing 0-2 and staring at certain defeat, Sharan Damania of Khar Gymkhana rallied to a thrilling 3-2 win to storm into the semi-finals in the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana on Friday.

Damania recovered from the early jolt against an in-form Ibrahim Shaikh of Mandpeshwar Civic Foundation to race to a 61-106, 68-106, 88-86, 103-81, 110-71 win in a riveting best-of-five frames quarter-final contest.

Shaikh got off to a dream start with impressive potting and bagged the first two frames  that left Damania helpless. Shaikh was up by 20 points in the third frame and looked set to seal the match until he missed an easy brown that allowed Damania to snatch the frame.

Shaikh’s blemish proved costly as it changed his fortunes in dramatic fashion. He needed  three snookers in the fourth frame and lost his way.

Shaikh held on to a narrow seven-point advantage in the decider but an inspired Damania came back to fire a decisive break of 35 to snatch the frame and match which left Shaikh bewildered.

Damania set up a semi-final clash with Sushant Khade of Vashi, while V. Raja Subramaniam of Matunga Gymkhana ended the winning streak of Hyderabad’s Binoth Vittal with a 96-72, 89-62, 107-102 win to set up the other semi-final against formidable Farhad Tengra of Elphinstone Cricket Club.
