Khade wins four hours battle

Sushant Khade of Vashi overcame Shekhar Surve of Shivaji Park Gymkhana 3-2 in a marathon four-hour encounter to advance to the semi-finals of the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana on Thursday.

Khade (+55) recovered after trailing on two occasions and surged to a 99-104, 100-89, 95-113, 114-103, 107-94 win in the longest match in the competition.

In a tight contest between two cautious cueists, Surve frittered away a crucial 2-1 advantage after snatching the first and third frames in the best-of-five frames quarter-final.

After winning the fourth frame, Khade held his nerve in the decider as he impressed with the colours and cleared from brown to black to heave a sigh of relief.

In another quarter-final encounter, Farhad Tengra (+35) of Elphinstone Cricket Club rallied from the loss of the opening frame to beat young Akief Haveliwala (+50) of CCI 59-99, 97-85, 125-91, 112-101.

Haveliwala, who briefly trained with the legendary Tony Monteiro to get his basics right, got off to a dream start with impressive potting and was rewarded with a break of 27 in the opening frame.

But title contender Tengra, though not at his best, ignored the early setback and recovered from a narrow deficit to snatch the second frame on the pink. With that, the veteran on the local circuit announced his arrival and went up 2-1 following significant breaks of 15 and 22, respectively in quick succession early in the third frame that overshadowed Haveliwala’s instant reply with a break of 22.

The plethora of fouls in the third and fourth frames were unlikely impediments in Haveliwala’s otherwise steady performance and Tengra made the most of his opponent’s blemishes.

Haveliwala kept his hopes alive with a two-point advantage in the crucial fourth frame as he led 101-99 with brown to black remaining. But Tengra returned to overtake that lead and sealed the issue on the blue after Haveliwala threw in the towel.

Earlier, in the last best-of-three frames pre-quarter-final tie, Binoth Vittal of Hyderabad shocked favourite Abdul Rehman of Islam Gymkhana 106-102, 69-99, 96-83 in a thriller.
