Tengra in Quarter Finals

Farhad Tengra of Elphinstone Cricket Club recovered from a substantial deficit in the crucial second frame to storm into the quarter-finals, in the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana on Wednesday.

The only fancied cueist to remain in the competition with a handicap of +35, following the ouster of all the formidable players in a long list of casualties, Tengra was forced to struggle for a 100-87, 86-79 win that ended the winning streak of a cautious Saumil Karkera of Garware Club House.

Tengra, who relied on the black ball to snatch the opening frame, trailed by a huge 35 points in the second frame. But he crept back into the match with impressive safety play and snookers before leaving Karkera stranded.

In another tight pre-quarter-final tie, Shekhar Surve (+50) of Shivaji Park Gymkhana overcame young Nikhil Mirani (+50) of Khar Gymkhana 79-114, 93-85, 94-82.

After dropping the opening frame, Surve continued to endure a strong challenge right to the end of the match and was almost shunted out in the second frame. Mirani frittered away the opportunity of booking his berth in the quarter-finals when he missed the pink that rattled the jaw in the second frame and allowed Surve to return to pot the pink and black to force the decider that ended in a thrilling black ball win for Surve.

Joining Tengra and Surve in the quarter-finals were Sharan Damania of Khar Gymkhana and Sushant Khade of Vashi.
