Desai, Sable win thrillers.

Dashrath Sable and Pranav Desai registered thrilling first round wins in the Gold filled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana on Wednesday.

On a day of exciting snooker, Garware Club House marker Sable overcame formidable Andrew Dyer of Catholic Gymkhana 93-75, 101-108, 103-94 in a close encounter that included a pulsating win for Dyer in the second frame following a black ball tie that kept his hopes alive.

Dyer came back strongly with an impressive challenge in the third and deciding frame that could have gone either way. But Sable held on dearly to a slender lead to take it away after Dyer faltered in a black ball finish.

Pranav Desai (+45) of Santacruz Gymkhana escaped to a narrow 114-104, 114-113 win over a determined Mehernosh Billimoria (+60) of Bombay Gymkhana in another absorbing contest.

Billimoria frittered away substantial 30+ leads in both frames as the formidable Desai crept back into the match. A significant break of 20 in the second frame changed Desai’s fortunes as he led 98-83. The frame could have gone either way, but Desai came up with impressive snookers to seal the issue.
