Karkare shocks Ootam

 

Saumil Karkera of Garware Club House shocked Maharashtra No. 3 Nikhil Ootam to storm into the pre-quarter-finals, in the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana on Tuesday.

 

Title contender Ootam of CCI joined a long list of casualties In one of the biggest upsets in the tournament as Karkera romped to a 88-68, 95-23 win. Ootam struggled to find his form and with a weak challenge coming from his fancied opponent Karkera seized the opportunity to sail ahead.

 

On a day of significant breaks, V. ‘Raja’ Subramaniam of Matunga Gymkhana rifled in a 31 in the opening frame en route to a 2-0 win over Gaurav Jaisinghani of Vashi that took him to the quarter-finals.

 

Earlier, in the fourth round, Subramaniam fired a break of 40 in the second frame while escaping to a 108-66, 108-100 win over T.A. Zaheer of Thane that included a thrilling black ball finish in the second frame.

 

Jaisinghani also constructed a break of 41 in the second frame while prevailing over Rohan Punjani of CCI 2-0 in another fourth round tie.

 

Banoth Vittal of Hyderabad remained on course following a close 102-101, 113-91 win over Khar Gymkhana marker Ashok More that sealed the winner’s place in the pre-quarter-finals.
