Arantxa, Manjeet shocked.

World under-21 No. 4 Arantxa Sanchis and Manjeet Singh Bhomer joined the casualty list in the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana on Tuesday.

On an ominous day for the favourites, young Sanchis (+50) went down to Gaurav Jaisinghania (+60) of Vashi 1-2 in an exciting first round encounter.

Sanchis, who is also the junior national billiards and snooker champion, Maharashtra state champion and India No. 4 among seniors, got off to a winning start by snatching a tight opening frame. But surprisingly, she fell back and failed to recover, as Jaisinghania surged to substantial leads in the next two frames to take the match away.

In the other upset of the day, Amit Joshi (+60) of MCF stunned formidable Manjeet Singh Bhomer (+50) of North Indian Association 99-103, 107-84, 97-91 in an absorbing encounter. Bhomer pocketed a close first frame and was forced to battle hard in the next two as Joshi stayed ahead and held on.

Fancied Shekhar Surve (+50) of Shivaji Park Gymkhana escaped to victory following a thrilling 2-1 win over Abdulla Sapatwalla of Catholic Gymkhana in a best-of-three frames contest that included black ball finishes in all three frames.

Abdulla, who enjoyed a handicap of +70, frittered away a 20-point advantage in the decider as Surve recovered brilliantly to earn a place in the second round.

Ishpreet Singh Chadha of Khar Gymkhana, the youngest player in the competition, kept his hopes alive when he beat Shabbir Masani of Catholic Gymkhana 2-1.
