Hyderabad lad Vittal stretched

Fancied Banoth Vittal of Hyderabad survived a scare before advancing to the fourth round, in the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana on Monday.

Vittal (+45) endured a late challenge against CCI marker Prakash Karande before surging to a hard fought 102-62, 64-116, 121-82 win in a keen contest.

After trailing 0-1, Karande kept his hopes alive by snatching the second frame in impressive fashion by a comfortable margin. It put the pressure back on Vittal but he took away the deciding third frame after enjoying a substantial lead that left Karande helpless.

Also advancing to the fourth round was formidable V. ‘Raja’ Subramaniam of Matunga Gymkhana who prevailed over Gunmeen Kohli of MIG Cricket Club, Bandra in straight frames.

Nikhil Mirani of Khar Gymkhana entered the pre-quarter-finals with a narrow 107-92, 75-101, 113-107 win over Kartikeye Sharma of Vashi.
