Yasin Merchant shocked!

Twice Asian champion Yasin Merchant crashed out in the first round of the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana on Monday.

Anonymous Trimbak Deorukhkar of Catholic Gymkhana ignored the reputation of his famed opponent and made the most of home conditions to fashion a dramatic 98-64, 73-98, 78-42 win.

Enjoying a handicap of +65, a serene Deorukhkar kicked off his campaign by snatching the opening frame, much to the surprise of Merchant.

But Merchant, who recently clinched a title in Chennai, fired a significant break of 35 in the second frame to draw level and force the decider in the best-of-three frames contest.

Going into the final frame, a consistent Deorukhkar fashioned a famous victory by relying on impressive safety play and positioning and was rewarded with a crucial lead that left Merchant helpless and with little hope of a recovery.

In another upset, Sunil Rajani (+60) of Vashi rallied brilliantly to beat PJ Hindu Gymkhana marker Sunil Jadhav (+55) 2-1 in another exciting first round.

Fancied Anandeep Kohli (+40) of Khar Gymkhana survived an early scare before prevailing over Col. Francis Sanchis 80-113, 100-86, 115-87.
