Khade pips Pachpute by one point

Sushant Khade of Vashi won a black ball thriller to storm into the pre-quarter-finals, in the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana on Saturday.

Khade endured a late challenge to overcome Avdhoot Pachpute of Mumbai Port Trust 128-92, 62-114, 105-104 in a tight fourth round contest.

After trading a frame each, Pachpute was resting on a comfortable cushion with a 30-point lead in the decider. But he frittered away the advantage as Khade crept back to narrow the margin. Pachpute then missed an easy pink, which ended his hopes of advancing in the competition.

In a third round match that also went the distance, Nikhil Mirani of Khar Gymkhana beat Chandra Poojari of Tata Sports Club 113-122, 95-88, 119-83.

After dropping the opening frame, Mirani battled back into the fray by snatching the second frame after Poojari missed the black. Poojari had his chances in the decider as well after some impressive snookers late in the frame, but he lost his way with poor potting that allowed Mirani to take the match away.

Khar Gymkhana marker Ashok More remained on course with a 109-68, 112-76 third round win over Dinesh Dodia that included a significant break of 23 in the second frame, which ended after More missed an easy pink.

Akief Haveliwala of CCI advanced to the quarter-finals following an impressive 97-129, 112-72, 128-79 win over Ankit Thakkar of Matunga Gymkhana.
