Sangeeta shocks Shahade

Sangeeta Hemchand of Willingdon Sports Club, Mahalaxmi rallied to shock favourite Bhushan Shahade to breeze into the fourth round of the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana on Friday.

Enjoying a handicap of +60 Hemchand, the only lady cueist remaining in the competition, came up with a late charge to overcome formidable Shahade 85-133, 116-83, 101-64.

Shahade won the opening frame that put Hemchand under early pressure. But Hemchand, who had shocked fancied Sunil Rajani in the previous round, staged a brilliant recovery with impressive safety play and potting to leave Shahade stranded in the next two frames.

Hemchand’s effort overshadowed the other upsets of the day as formidable Mahesh Jagdale of North Indian Association and Arun Agrawal of Elphinstone Cricket Club crashed out in dramatic fashion.

Both went down to equally formidable cueists as Abdul Rehman of Islam Gymkhana beat Jagdale 98-78, 89-95, 92-76 in a close encounter, while Amandeep Kohli of Khar Gymkhana prevailed over Agrawal 115-77, 93-80 that included a tight second frame.
