Marker Pawar squanders chances

Marker Sudhir Pawar squandered his chances and crashed out in the opening round of the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament that was inaugurated by former national champion Arvind Savur at the Catholic Gymkhana on Friday.

Fancied Gunmeen Kohli (+55) of MIG, Bandra escaped to victory over Catholic Gymkhana’s Pawar (+60) 110-103, 115-87 in an exciting encounter that gave the tournament an explosive start.

Pawar was in good form and got off to a dream start with small but substantial breaks as he led 103-96 with only the black remaining in the opening frame. But Kohli sunk in the black to draw level and force a tie, before snatching the frame.

Pawar again had his chances in the second frame but bungled on crucial occasions. Kohli capitalized on his opponent’s blemishes and took the match away.

In contrast, Goldie Kohli (+60) of Khar Gymkhana and Banoth Vittal of Hyderabad eased into the second round.

The tournament, being held under the auspices of the Billiards & Snooker Association of Maharashtra, features leading cueists from all over the country including twice Asian champion Yasin Merchant, Dhruv Sitwalla, Faisal Khan of Railways (Delhi), R. Girish, Merzdi Kalyaniwala, Nikhil Ootam and Siddharth Parikh.

Matches upto the pre-quarter-finals will be played over best-of-three frames, quarter and semi-finals over best-of-five and final over best-of-seven frames.
