Pune's Vishal Malhotra stuns Langani

wins nail-biting third frame by one point

Pune’s Vishal Malhotra shocked fancied Kishore Langani in a thriller to storm into the fourth round of the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana on Thursday.

Playing as the underdog with a +55 handicap, Malhotra put behind an indifferent start to romp to a 73-102, 103-95 104-103 win over Khar Gymkhana’s Langani (+50) in the closest contest of the day, which gave Malhotra a one-point win in the third and deciding frame that ended in a nail-biting black ball finish.

After dropping the opening frame, Malhotra recovered brilliantly to find form in the second frame that helped him snatch the frame on the pink to force the decider and keep his hopes alive.

Formidable Farhad Tengra (+35) of Elphinstone Cricket Club survived a scare before prevailing over Pratush Somayagula (+40) in another third round encounter between quality cueists.

Tengra was 1-0 up after Somayagula was forced to forfeit the opening frame for arriving much behind schedule. Yet to regain his composure, Somayagula frittered away a golden opportunity in the second frame when he came breathtakingly close to forcing the decider.

Somayagula missed an easy green while leading by a substantial 20 points and left Tengra on. Tengra cleared till the pink and opted for a safety shot.

Somayagula returned to play a forgettable safety shot on the black and left Tengra with a long black which he calmly potted.

Ibrahim Shaikh of Mandpeshwar Civic Foundation remained on course as he became the first cueist to advance to the quarter-finals following an impressive 109-59, 96-109, 101-72 win over Devansh Jariwala of PJ Hindu Gymkhana.
