Snooker
star Yasin Merchant came close to coming a cropper in the battle of the sexes
that lit up the Rs.8 Lakh Otters Club All India 9-Ball Pool Tournament on
Tuesday. Women's National 9-ball Pool champ Anuja Chandra, who had beaten
Devendra Joshi and Dhruv Sitwala in a snooker tournament at the Islam Gymkhana
in 2006, led Yasin Merchant 6-4 and had a chance to go 7-5 up and break for the
match. But she missed the No 7 ball and Yasin survived with an 8-6 win. Not so
lucky was Mahesh Jagdale who was beaten 8-7 by Anuja Later National champ Rafat
Habib was shocked 8-5 by Divya Sharma. But hang on, that was not a battle of the
sexes as Divya happens to be a lad from Haryana.
Said Yasin about Anuja, "Anuja is a
decent player. In Pool, one can't predict the run of the balls."
Anuja said, "I had a chance but that miss
in the 12th rack cost me dear". Husband Manan who won his match against
Chennai's K Ranjan 8-3, said, "I thought Anuja had a chance."

Joshi on Monday, completed his third straight win in Group A and sounded a
warning to the rest of the formidable field with an impressive win 8-5 win over
the favourite. Joining Sharma in the round of 16 was Merchant who won 8-5 over
Birjesh Damani of Kolkata for his third win.
