Geet Sethi won a billiards title for the first time since 2007 when he tamed Pankaj Advani by 1000-289 in the final of the G. Raman Nair Annual Billiards Championship 2009.
Since winning the Bangalore National title in January 2007 Sethi had not won much except reaching finals of the major events including the World Professional where Mike Russell kept winning.
But he is an old horse and once he gets his rhythm he is always a tough one to beat.
Just the other day at the induction of Viren Rasquinha as COO of the Olympic Gold Quest program I was joking that of the luminaries on the panel, Prakash Padukone, Niraj Bajaj and Rasquinha, Geet was was the only one still active at the highest level. Bajaj said that was the beauty of cue sports that you could play till you were at a ripe age.
Sethi has proved he can not only play but also win by his success at Bangalore. It augurs well for his chances at the EBOS event in Belgium next. Sethi was happy that the EBOS circuit had grown. "Nine events, that quite good going for billiards."
And rest assured Sethi will make the most of it. Such is his commitment and hunger for winning because he knows the field is top class, anyone of the top six can win on his day. Sethi is determined that every day is his day.
Well done champ. What a pity billiards is not an Olympic sport. There would have been no reason for a Gold Quest for the gold would have been ours.
