Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA), in an attempt to placate the cueists, have introduced a central contract system according to which the group of top eight will start receiving monthly stipends in three categories A, B and C
"We have created history of sorts by giving central contracts to the top eight cueists of the country. We had planned to do it earlier but were constrained due to financial reasons," Alamgir Anwar Shaikh, President, PBSA, stated
"This step will go a long way in leasing the cueists to concentrate on their game rather than worrying for their livelihood. We would consider raising the amount whenever our resources permit us to do so," he added.
Top ranked and New National Champion Mohammad Asif becomes the major beneficiary as he will be pocketing the highest purse with a monthly stipend of Rs.8000 followed by Mohammad Sajjad, having taken the runner-up slot in the Nationals 2009, who will be getting Rs.7000 per month. The other top six cueists in the national ranking chart, Raees Khan, Sharjeel Mahmood, Inam-ur-Rahman, Imran Shahzad, Rambel Gul and Sultan Mohammad, will be receiving Rs.5,000 every month.
The PBSA have become only the second sports body of the country, after the cash-rich Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), to offer monthly salaries.
The decision to this effect was taken in principle during the meeting between the officials of the PBSA and the 'rebel' cueists who had boycotted the Independence Cup national ranking tournament in Islamabad last August. The boycotting cueists, led by Shehram Changezi, had demanded of the PBSA to secure jobs for them and they had refused to play until then.
The PBSA, while expressing their inability for providing jobs, then offered the cueists a package of monthly salary out of their own resources. The deal was negotiated successfully as all the other eligible cueists, with the sole exception of Shehram Changezi, entered the National Snooker Championship held at the Karachi Gymkhana recently.
After the national championship PBSA announced National Yearly Ranking chart previous number 13 player Muhammad Asif got top position with 10 points during the national championship and he become new Pakistani national champion and qualify for the Asian championship with Runner up Muhammad Sajjad Butt.
Pakistan top cueist and former World Champion Muhammad Yousaf and former Asian No. 2 Saleh Muhammad not seen in National Championship and both are out from the current ranking.
