International Sports
Journalists Day is to be celebrated all over the world on
July 2nd. Athlete Soma Biswas is to meet the Kolkata sport-scribes.
This day has been earmarked as the official day of celebration
because of its significance as the date when the International
Sports Press Association was established at the 1924 Paris Olympics.
Gianni Merlo, the AIPS President, in a message, stated:
"I urge you to strive for greatness, not only
professionally, but by representing the ideals of our association by
setting good examples as global citizens. It is now more important
than ever to consolidate our traditions."
Merlo added: "We have indeed witnessed the
development and expansion of our association from its foundation
during the 1924 Olympics with 29 nations present, into vibrant
global organization representing more than 150 member countries and
more than 9,000 journalists. I wish to take this opportunity to
acknowledge the contributions
of
each and every one of you and hope that you continue with your
valued support."

Pradeep Vijayakar, Vice-President, Sports Journalists Federation of
India urged sport-scribes to provide a level-playing field for sport
folk of all disciplines. "They all work hard
and deserve to be be acknowledged," said Vijayakar who could
go in the Guinness Book for having covered 27 different sports and
games from cricket to karate, boxing to bridge, kabaddi to archery
and horse racing to vintage car rally.
